Love  in  a Fallen  City

Then one night, after tossing and turning in bed for hours before finally drifting off, the telephone suddenly rang.

這一天，在深夜里，她已經(jīng)上了床多時(shí)，只是翻來覆去，好容易朦朧了一會(huì)，床頭的電話鈴?fù)蝗焕世薯懥似饋怼?/span>

It was Liuyuan's voice. "I love you," he said. And hung up.

她一聽，卻是柳原的聲音，道："我愛你。"就掛斷了。

Liusu held the receiver in her hand and stared into space, her heart pounding. Softly she put it back in the cradle. No sooner had she hung up than it rang again.

流蘇心跳得撲通撲通，握住了耳機(jī)，發(fā)了一會(huì)楞，方才輕輕的把它放回原處，誰知才擱上去，又是鈴聲大作。

Again she raised the receiver. Liuyuan said, "I forgot to ask-do you love me?"

她再度拿起聽筒，柳原在那邊問道："我忘了問你一聲，你愛我么？"

Liusu coughed. When at last she spoke her throat was still dry and raspy.

流蘇咳嗽了一聲再開口，喉嚨還是沙啞的。

"You must have known long ago," she said in a low voice. "Why else did I come to Hong Kong?"

她低聲道："你早該知道了，我為什么上香港來？"

……

Liuyuan didn't say anything. Then, after a long while, he said "In The Book of Songs there's a verse—

"柳原不語，良久方道："詩(shī)經(jīng)上有一首詩(shī)──"

"I don't understand that sort of thing," Liusu cut in.

流蘇忙道："我不懂這些。"

"I know you don't understand," Liuyuan said impatiently. "If you understood, I wouldn't need to explain! So listen:

柳原不耐煩道："知道你不懂，若你懂，也用不著我講了！我念你聽：

"Facing life, death, distance

Here is my promise to thee—I take thy hand in mine:

We will grow old together.

死生契闊──與子相悅，執(zhí)子之手，與子偕老。

"My Chinese isn't very good, and I don't know if I've got it right, but I think this is a very mournful poem which says that life and death and parting are enormous things, well beyond human control.

我的中文根本不行，可不知道解釋得對(duì)不對(duì)。我看那是最悲哀的一首詩(shī)，生與死與離別，都是大事，不由我們支配的。

Compared to the great forces in the world, we people are so very, very small.

比起外界的力量，我們?nèi)耸嵌嗝葱?，多么?。?/span>

But still we say I will stay with you forever, we will never, in this lifetime, leave each other as if we really could decide these things!"

可是我們偏要說：我永遠(yuǎn)和你在一起；我們一生一世都別離開。──好像我們自己做得了主似的！"

But the night was so still that even from a distance she could hear Liuyuan's perfectly calm voice saying "Liusu, from your window, can you see the moon?"

可是四周太靜了，雖是離了這么遠(yuǎn)，她也聽得見柳原的聲音在那里心平氣和地說："流蘇，你的窗子里看得見月亮么？"

She didn't know why, but suddenly she was sobbing. The moon shone bright and blurry through her tears, silver, with a slightly greenish tint.

流蘇不知道為什么，忽然哽咽起來。淚眼中的月亮大而模糊，銀色的，有著綠的光棱。

"In my window," said Liuyuan, "there is a flowering vine that blocks half the view. Maybe it's a rose. Or maybe not."

柳原道："我這邊，窗子上面吊下一枝藤花，擋住了一半。也許是玫瑰，也許不是。

▎背景介紹

《傾城之戀》是張愛玲最膾炙人口的短篇小說之一。是一篇探討愛情、婚姻和人性在戰(zhàn)亂及其前后，怎樣生存和掙扎的作品。

故事發(fā)生在香港，上海來的白家小姐白流蘇，經(jīng)歷了一次失敗的婚姻，身無分文，在親戚間備受冷嘲熱諷，看盡世態(tài)炎涼。

偶然認(rèn)識(shí)了多金瀟灑的單身漢范柳原，便拿自己當(dāng)做賭注，遠(yuǎn)赴香港，博取范柳原的愛情，要爭(zhēng)取一個(gè)合法的婚姻地位。

兩個(gè)情場(chǎng)高手斗法的場(chǎng)地在淺水灣飯店，原本白流蘇似是服輸了，但在范柳原即將離開香港時(shí)，日軍開始轟炸淺水灣，范柳原折回保護(hù)白流蘇。

狂轟濫炸，生死交關(guān)，牽絆了范柳原，流蘇欣喜中不無悲哀，如此患難，大概足以做十年夫妻。想象一片黑暗的山洞中，兩個(gè)人擎火相遇，只得攜手走下去。

但故事動(dòng)聽之處更在于，他們?cè)谙嗷?zhēng)斗中萌生了愛情。小說的結(jié)局看似圓滿，實(shí)則浸透著蒼涼。張愛玲1945年自己寫了篇《關(guān)于〈傾城之戀〉的老實(shí)話》，當(dāng)中說：“我從她（流蘇）的觀點(diǎn)寫這故事，而她始終沒有徹底懂得柳原的人。
